Domestic donkey
Long ears and a powerful voice belong to an animal that has accompanied people for thousands of years.

The domestic donkey descends from the African wild ass. Alongside native wildlife, Akcent ZOO also keeps animals long associated with people. Domestication tells a different story from the conservation of wild animals in Polish forests.
A large head, long ears and a thin tail ending in a tuft give the donkey its distinctive outline. It has modest food requirements and tolerates a shortage of water. These are qualities of an animal whose ancestors lived where resources had to be used sparingly.
People used donkeys to carry loads on their backs, pull vehicles and provide rides. All these tasks made them useful in everyday transport. A pack animal carries goods, while a draught animal moves them by pulling a cart or other equipment.
In Białystok, the donkey's loud voice influenced the design of its enclosure. The animals were placed beside the bison, away from nearby apartment blocks. Zoo layout therefore reflected behaviour as well as body size.

The donkey descends from the African wild ass. It is not a small horse with longer ears, but an animal with a history of its own. Alongside forest predators and bison at Akcent ZOO, it represents animals whose lives are closely linked to people.
It has a large head, long ears and a thin tail with a tuft at the end. It tolerates a shortage of water and has modest food needs. People have long used its strength: donkeys carried loads, pulled carts and were ridden. An animal that carries goods on its back is called a pack animal.
A donkey can make a very loud sound. Białystok's zoo took this into account when choosing its location. Its enclosure stands beside the bison, away from nearby apartment buildings. The animal's voice therefore helped shape the layout of the whole zoo.
