O exponátu

On 10 July 2025, a female wildcat arrived at Akcent ZOO. Born in Wrocław in 2016, she had lived at Kraków Zoo since 2017. Her move to Białystok resulted from cooperation between zoos, with transport arranged by the Dolina Dolistówki animal shelter.

The wildcat resembles a striped domestic cat, but its thick tail stands out. Dark stripes cross its grey-brown coat. In woodland, these colours make the animal difficult to see, particularly when it rests motionless among plants.

European wildcats are mostly solitary. They are usually active at night, at dawn or at dusk, although they may also move around during the day. Their fur thickens in winter, making their body appear bulkier.

The wildcat can retract its claws, helping to keep them sharp. Its canine teeth hold prey, while other specialised teeth cut meat. Despite its resemblance to a pet cat, it has the equipment and way of life of a wild hunter.

Pro děti

A female wildcat came to Białystok in July 2025. She had previously lived in Kraków and was born in Wrocław. Zoos and Białystok's animal shelter worked together on her journey. This is the real story of an animal moving to a new home.

A wildcat looks a little like a striped cat you might see near home. It has a particularly thick tail, though, and dark stripes cross its grey-brown fur. This woodland coat helps it disappear among plants. In winter, its fur grows even thicker.

This cat usually lives alone. It is most often active at night, at dawn or in the evening, although it sometimes walks around in daylight. It can tuck away its claws when it is not using them. Sharp canine teeth help it hold prey, and other teeth slice meat. It may resemble a pet, but it remains a wild predator.
