The European bison is Europe's largest land mammal. Its powerful build does not, however, indicate a meat-eating way of life. This resident of Akcent ZOO is a herbivore that feeds on a variety of woodland and meadow plants. A body of this size requires a regular supply of substantial amounts of vegetation.
Its diet includes grasses and other herbaceous plants, sedges, shoots, buds and the bark of trees and shrubs. Its menu therefore extends well beyond leaves. It uses different levels and parts of the vegetation, from low ground cover to reachable branches.
Extensive broadleaved and mixed forests are among the bison's natural habitats. Białowieża Forest is one of the places most closely associated with the species. Meeting a bison in Białystok's zoo thus has a clear connection to the region's wildlife.
Bison occupy Akcent ZOO's largest enclosure, on the side facing Zwierzyniecki Forest. The local collection's history includes the siblings Porania and Poskrom, born in Poznań in 2021. Their story links this garden with cooperation between Polish zoos.
