Common chimpanzee
Gestures, tools and freshly built sleeping nests shape a chimpanzee’s life.

Chimpanzees communicate through calls, gestures and facial expressions. Living in a group involves much more than simply being next to one another: body movements and facial expressions convey information to other animals. Communities include both males and females, and their relationships are an important part of daily activity.
After dark, chimpanzees rest in trees. They build nests there, making new ones for the next night. Trees provide sleeping places, although food is gathered in different ways. Chimpanzees are omnivores: they eat fruit, leaves, seeds and flowers, as well as insects, eggs and meat. Honey also features on the menu.
To extract insects, they use tools made from plant material. A stick or another suitable piece helps them reach places their fingers alone cannot access. This ability combines dexterous hands with behaviour suited to a particular task.
Chimpanzees live in African tropical forests, mountain forests and wooded savannah. A female cares for her infant for several years until it becomes more independent. Learning about food, movement and social relationships therefore develops through a long childhood rather than immediately after birth.

Chimpanzees communicate with more than their voices. They use gestures and facial expressions too. They live in groups containing both males and females.
For the night they prepare nests in trees. The following day they build new ones. They eat fruit, leaves, seeds and flowers, but also insects and other animals. That is why we call them omnivores.
To get insects out of their nests, chimpanzees use pieces of plants as tools. This helps them reach their food. A young chimpanzee stays in its mother's care for several years. Before becoming independent, it has to master many of the skills it needs for life in an African forest.
