Rothschild's giraffe
Acacia leaves, long strides and life on the savannah shape the giraffe’s daily rhythm.

The Ugandan giraffe is also known as Rothschild's giraffe. In the wild it inhabits protected savannah areas of Kenya and Uganda. It lives alone or in small groups and is most active in the morning and evening. The company of other herbivores, including zebras and antelopes, helps make feeding in open country safer.
Its main food consists of acacia leaves and young shoots. Flowers and fruit supplement this diet. This large body therefore depends on food growing in trees and shrubs, not just at ground level. An adult giraffe can weigh around 830 to 1,200 kilograms.
Its pacing gait is distinctive. With each step, it raises the legs on the same side: the left foreleg and left hindleg together, then the right pair. This movement helps it take long strides. Watching the sequence of its legs reveals a detail easily missed when looking only at its elevated head.
Pregnancy lasts around 450 days. A calf remains with its mother for considerably longer than the pregnancy itself, sometimes until about 22 months of age. Extended care of young is another part of the giraffe's life on the savannah.

Its way of walking has a name: pacing. This means it moves the legs on one side of its body together. First come the left foreleg and left hindleg, then the right pair. That is how it takes long strides. You can look for this detail when a giraffe walks.
