Rhododendrons and azaleas
A distinctive collection of flowering shrubs, especially attractive in May and June.
Jazyk obsahu
Rhododendrons and azaleas are among the most recognisable plants in Gołubie Botanical Garden. May and June are the months when their flowers particularly attract visitors. The collection includes species and garden cultivars, allowing different forms of these shrubs to be compared.
Azaleas belong to the same botanical genus, Rhododendron, as other rhododendrons. These plants include forms that retain their leaves through winter and others that shed them in autumn. This difference, visible outside the flowering season, is as interesting as flower colour. Some azaleas change leaf colour before shedding their leaves.
Most rhododendrons and azaleas need acidic, moist but well-drained soil. Light shade and shelter from drying winds usually suit them. Growing conditions therefore help shape the collection’s appearance. Flowers invite comparison, but leaves deserve attention too: their size and persistence help distinguish plants after the flowers have faded.

In May and June, rhododendrons and azaleas attract attention in Gołubie. The collection contains different species and cultivars, so the shrubs do not all look alike. Compare their flowers, then look at the leaves as well.
Azaleas and other rhododendrons belong to a single botanical genus called Rhododendron. Some keep their leaves through winter; others lose them in autumn. Some azaleas change leaf colour before the leaves fall. These plants are worth observing after flowering, too.
Most prefer acidic soil. It should be moist, but water must be able to drain through it. Light shade and protection from drying winds also help them grow. Colourful flowers depend on the life of the whole plant: roots in the soil, leaves on the branches and the work of gardeners.
