O exponátu

The Wollemi pine is one of the rare trees documented in Gołubie Botanical Garden’s collection. Its scientific name is Wollemia nobilis. The species’ story leads to Australia and sheltered gorges in Wollemi National Park, New South Wales.

Living Wollemi pines were discovered there in 1994. The tree belongs to the araucaria family, and its flat leaves look unlike a pine’s long needles. On lateral shoots they form distinctive, almost flat arrangements. The Wollemi pine remains green throughout the year, making its leaves an important identification feature.

Pollen cones and seed cones develop on the same tree. Seed cones appear higher in the crown than pollen cones, and the seeds have wings. These are features of the species; the size and maturity of an individual plant determine which can be seen. In the collection, start with the label, then compare the leaf arrangement with other conifers.

Pro děti

The Wollemi pine comes from Australia. Its scientific name is Wollemia nobilis, and it is part of the collection in Gołubie. Living trees of this species were discovered only in 1994, in sheltered gorges of Wollemi National Park.

It is a conifer, but its leaves do not look like long pine needles. They are flat and lie almost in one plane on side branches. The Wollemi pine stays green all year. It belongs to the araucaria family.

A mature tree can produce both pollen cones and seed cones. Those containing seeds grow higher in the crown, and the seeds have wings. A young specimen may not yet display all these features. From the path, focus first on comparing its leaves with those of another conifer.
