Equipment for Processing Raw Materials
Mills, presses and sterilisers reveal the mechanical work behind preparing medicines.
Jazyk obsahu
Three smooth rollers turning in opposite directions at different speeds ground raw materials for ointments, pastes and creams. Their number gives the device its name: a three-roll mill. This type of mill belonged to the heavier equipment used in pharmacy.
A pin mill has a different construction. Its two discs stand vertically, parallel to each other; one remains stationary while the other rotates. Projecting steel pins intermesh when the machine is closed. The steel working parts needed to resist wear. Presses performed another task: extracting juices from fruit and herbs, as well as obtaining oils.
Sterilisers form a separate group of tightly sealed vessels. High temperatures under pressure were used to sterilise glass, ceramic and metal laboratory items. The equipment for grinding and cleaning is accompanied by sugar-coating drums and an ointment mixer. Together, the collection presents several operations involved in preparing medicines and maintaining the equipment used in their production.

Some pharmacy tools were heavy machines. A three-roll mill had three smooth rollers. Turning in different directions at different speeds, they ground ingredients for ointments, pastes and creams.
Another mill used two discs. One moved while the other stayed still. Steel parts resembling fingers intermeshed between them. Presses squeezed juice from fruit and herbs and helped obtain oils.
Sterilisers were used to clean laboratory equipment. High temperatures and pressure acted inside their sealed containers. Glass, ceramic and metal objects were sterilised there. The collection also includes equipment associated with coated tablets and a mixer for ointments.
