St Marcellinus church-mausoleum
A church built in 1817-1820 on the model of the Roman Maison Carrée in Nîmes, with the Raczyński family crypt below.
Jazyk obsahu
The church was built by Edward Raczyński in 1817-1820.
Its architectural model was the Roman temple known as the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, from the 1st century BC. A modern material for its time, cast iron, was used in the construction: the column bases and capitals, the acanthus frieze, the lion statues and the door handles were cast from it.
The interior is divided into two levels. The upper one, with Empire-style decoration, serves as the church. The lower one is the family mausoleum, designed as a romantic medieval crypt with Romanesque-Gothic decor inspired by the old architecture of Italy, especially Sicily. Edward Raczyński intended the mausoleum as the resting place of his grandfather Kazimierz Raczyński and of the ancestors whose remains he brought from the monastery in Woźniki. Many generations of the Raczyński family rest here, including Roger Raczyński, whose white marble tomb with a full-figure sculpture was made by A. A. Salomon in 1865, and Edward Bernard Raczyński, founder of the Raczyński Foundation.
