O exponátu

The life of St Bernard of Clairvaux, the Passion of Christ and the archangels are among the principal subjects of paintings created in 1687-1689. Heraldic images accompany the figurative scenes. The decorations were part of the monastery’s Baroque rebuilding after the fire of 1671. Bernhard Rosa, abbot of the Cistercian monastery at Krzeszów, funded both the rebuilding and the painted decoration. Abbey accounts support an attribution to an unnamed painter from Vrchlabí and his son.

The paintings were later covered with paint. They were rediscovered in 2011 while the building was being adapted as a museum. The following year they were uncovered, conserved and partly reconstructed. The ensemble therefore combines surviving historical material with conservation work. Its imagery records the building’s Cistercian past, long before its present use for natural history displays.

Pro děti

The walls preserve paintings from 1687-1689. They show St Bernard of Clairvaux, the Passion of Christ and archangels, among other subjects. There are coats of arms too. The decoration followed the monastery fire of 1671. Abbot Bernhard Rosa of Krzeszów paid for it. A painter from Vrchlabí and his son are thought to have made it, although their names are unknown.

For a long time, the paintings were painted over. They were rediscovered in 2011 when the building was being prepared for the museum. In 2012 specialists uncovered and protected them, adding partial reconstructions. This work is called conservation. Today the decoration helps explain the building’s earlier role as a Cistercian establishment, before it housed the museum’s collection.
