Zygmunt Leśniak Memorial Room
A room dedicated to Zygmunt Leśniak, founder of the Strzyżów museum collection, the history of local schooling, and the clandestine youth organisation Demokratyczna Armia Krajowa.
Jazyk obsahu
Zygmunt Leśniak, a teacher at Strzyżów's secondary school, built a collection from objects donated by pupils and their families. The first items were housed in the school's basement. Damp conditions and a lack of space eventually forced the collection to be divided: a memorial room devoted to education remained at the school, while the town took responsibility for most of the historic objects.
The memorial room links the museum patron's life with the history of collecting and schooling in Strzyżów. A separate section concerns Demokratyczna Armia Krajowa, an underground youth organisation active in the town. It operated in 1949-1950, after the Second World War. Its story concerns young people's resistance to Poland's post-war political system.
The display also includes palaeontological material, introducing the region's natural prehistory alongside education and resistance. Leśniak looked after the community museum until 1980. Adam Kluska, associated with the Society of Friends of the Strzyżów Region, continued his work.
