Synagogue - Exhibition on the Jewish Residents of Strzyżów
An exhibition about the town’s Jewish residents and surviving architectural features of the former synagogue.
Jazyk obsahu
The exhibition about Strzyżów's Jewish residents is one of the museum's three branches. The other two are the Municipal Gallery and the shelter tunnel. It occupies the former synagogue, now used by the public library. Built in the late eighteenth century, the structure was partially remodelled in 1964-1966.
The rendered masonry building has rounded corners and rectangular windows set in deep recesses. Pilasters, shallow projections resembling columns, divide the elevations on three sides. During alterations, the former prayer hall was divided into two storeys and the schoolroom into three rooms. The building's use as a library therefore accompanies changes to its earlier internal layout.
A bimah supported by four substantial pillars survives, covered by a sail vault. It is a physical trace of the building's religious use, distinct from the later subdivisions. The library is named after Julian Przyboś. The Society of Friends of the Strzyżów Region also has its headquarters in the building.
