O exponátu

The Gustav Weese factory building, with a ground floor and two upper storeys, was erected in 1885 to a design by Reinhard Uebrick. It forms part of the industrial heritage of Toruń's New Town. Factory premises on neighbouring plots were connected to one another and to the owner's residence on Królowej Jadwigi Street. The factory and the proprietor's home formed a single complex spread across several addresses.

In the early 20th century, the company employed around 200 people, rising to 500 at busy times. Growing production required more space. Between 1909 and 1914 it was transferred to a new plant in Jakubskie Przedmieście. The old factory then changed its purpose: in 1927, the city bought the buildings for the Women's Industrial School. Classrooms took the place of confectionery production.

The building returned to its gingerbread roots in 2015 with the opening of the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread. The District Museum, the city and the Kopernik confectionery factory, which continues the Weese tradition, took part in the project. Former production rooms were converted into exhibition spaces, combining original objects with reconstructions and multimedia displays. The building itself remains an industrial monument with a history as a factory, a school and a museum.
