O exponátu

The BM-13N combines equipment from two countries: a Soviet rocket launcher and an American Studebaker US-6 truck. The museum vehicle dates from 1944. Trucks of this type reached the Soviet Union through the wartime Lend-Lease supply programme. Rather than a single long barrel, eight rails with sixteen guides stand above the rear of the truck. This structure carried and launched 132 mm rockets. Its open framework clearly distinguishes the Katyusha from a conventional gun mounted on a vehicle.

The system was operated by seven soldiers. The truck carried the launcher between positions, while its cab provided two seats. The rail-supporting structure stood behind the cab. The whole vehicle was painted military dark green, like other land vehicles in the collection. Folding steel window covers were fitted above the cab. They protected the glass from the rockets’ exhaust gases. This addition was directly related to the truck’s new role: it had become a platform for a launcher, and its cab needed extra protection.

Pro děti

Katyusha is the name of a launcher fitted to a truck. On this exhibit, the truck is American and the launcher is Soviet. The Studebaker US-6 dates from 1944. Vehicles like it were supplied during the war through an aid programme called Lend-Lease.

At the back are eight long rails with sixteen guides. The rockets travelled along them as they launched. Seven soldiers operated the system. The truck’s cab had two seats. Folding steel covers above the windows protected them from hot gases. The truck moved the whole device from place to place. The cab, wheels and tall rails show how a transport vehicle was adapted for a very different job.
