IS-2
A heavy tank from an early production series.
Jazyk obsahu
Poznań’s IS-2 belongs to the first production series of this Soviet heavy tank. The exhibit dates from 1944. It represents a different class from the T-34 medium tanks in the outdoor collection: heavy armoured vehicles built during the final period of the Second World War. Tanks of this type began reaching units in late January 1944. They replaced the KV heavy tanks previously in service. The development of the IS family therefore changed the equipment of units already using heavy tracked vehicles.
Around 3,400 IS-2 tanks were assembled in 1943-1945. The Poznań example comes from the early part of that production period. During the war, the Polish Army received 71 tanks of this type, delivered between October 1944 and April 1945. Some were subsequently returned. They equipped heavy tank regiments, while one vehicle was assigned to training in a training regiment.

The first IS-2s reached units in late January 1944. They were intended to replace older KV heavy tanks. Around 3,400 IS-2s were built between 1943 and 1945. That is the total number of vehicles of this type made during those years. The Polish Army received 71 of them during the war, from autumn 1944 to spring 1945, although some were later returned. One was used for practice in a training regiment.
