African dwarf crocodile

The African dwarf crocodile usually reaches around one and a half metres in length. It is a small crocodile, but has a heavily armoured neck, back and tail. Dark colouring on the back and sides contrasts with a yellowish belly carrying dark patches. Its armour helps protect it from other predators.

In the wild it occurs in western and central Africa. It is associated with wetlands, still water and forest habitats. It is mainly active at night. During the day it hides in sheltered places or burrows beside the water, so long periods of rest fit its natural rhythm. Small size and secretive behaviour matter in an environment where it may itself fall prey to a larger animal.

It hunts fish, frogs and crustaceans, among other animals. It catches food in its jaws and swallows smaller prey whole. Living between land and water gives it access to different food sources. Hunting for meat and trade in animals threaten wild populations. Protecting this small crocodile therefore also involves the remote wetlands and forests where it leads its hidden life.
