O exponátu

The bishop's apartment comprised three living chambers. Their vaults date from different building phases: those in the first two rooms from the end of the third quarter of the fourteenth century, and the third from around 1500. Elements separated by more than a century thus survive within a single apartment.

Under Bishop Andrzej Batory, who held office from 1589 to 1599, the middle chamber was divided into two smaller rooms. The partition was not removed until conservation work in 1974–1976. Paintings surviving on half of that room's vault were also uncovered at the time.

The corner chamber retains a fireplace and a recess marking a former passage to the bathhouse. A note from 1501 mentions the bathhouse. Heating and a separate place for bathing were features of the residence's domestic quarters, alongside the formal halls used for the bishop's official duties.

Today's exhibition 'Great Residents of Lidzbark Castle' introduces people associated with the residence. The chambers provide a historic setting, but their present arrangement is not the unchanged home of a single occupant. Room divisions, vaults of different dates and uncovered paintings document successive alterations to the apartment.
