O exponátu

A blue throat distinguishes the blue-throated macaw from the similar blue-and-yellow macaw. In Ara glaucogularis, a turquoise-blue back contrasts with yellow underparts. Rows of small feathers cross the pale skin of its face, and its strong bill is dark. Its Polish name refers to sapphire, but the plumage is far from a single colour.

Wild blue-throated macaws occur only in Bolivia, in the Beni region. Their habitat is a mosaic of savannas, riverine forests and palm groves. The fruits of the motacú palm, Attalea phalerata, are particularly important. Food ties the parrot to specific parts of this landscape, even when open ground lies between them. Pairs nest in cavities in large trees.

The species is Critically Endangered. Trapping for the bird trade contributed to its decline, while habitat loss and fragmentation reduce feeding and breeding sites. Protection therefore involves both the parrots and the trees supplying fruit and nest cavities. Borysew's blue-throated macaw is Ara glaucogularis; it should not be confused with the larger, almost entirely blue hyacinth macaw.

Pro děti

This parrot has a blue throat and back, but its belly is yellow. It is a blue-throated macaw. Thin rows of feathers cross the pale skin on its face. Its wild relatives live in just one country: Bolivia in South America.

There, clumps of palms and forest alternate with open savanna. The parrots eat palm fruits, especially those of the motacú palm. A cavity in a large tree gives a pair somewhere to nest. Trees therefore provide both food and a home for chicks. The species is highly threatened, partly because birds have been trapped for trade and their habitat has been damaged. Protecting this macaw also means looking after palm groves and old trees with nesting holes.
