The miraculous figure of Our Lady of Wambierzyce
A Gothic limewood carving: Mary offers fruit to the Christ Child, who holds a small bird.
Inhaltssprache
The Gothic figure of Our Lady of Wambierzyce dates from the second half of the 14th century. Including its base, it is just 28 centimetres tall. Carved from limewood, it is coated in polychromy, a layer of coloured paint. Its small scale contrasts with the elaborate Baroque altar that frames it.
Mary holds the naked Christ Child. Jesus carries a bird in his right hand and reaches with his left for the fruit offered by his mother. These details belong to the carving itself, rather than its later ornaments. The figure is sometimes covered with a dress that leaves the heads exposed; its fabrics change with feast days and the liturgical season.
The high altar, dated to 1720, is the work of Karol Sebastian Flacker. Several centuries older, the figure received a new architectural setting while retaining its role as an object of devotion. The gestures of Mary and Jesus, and the objects in their hands, reveal the details of the original composition.
