The Well Chapel of Our Lady
A hexagonal chapel over a spring, designed by Ewald Berger.
Inhaltssprache
The Well Chapel of Our Lady shelters a spring whose discovery is associated with 1678. The present building was constructed in 1894 to a design by Ewald Berger. An older pilgrimage tradition thus received a new architectural setting in stone.
The chapel has a hexagonal plan. Its composition includes a portal recess and a dome topped with a figure of Mary. The stone structure encloses a water source previously protected by a more modest chapel. It combines shelter for the spring with a Marian image visible above the roof.
A local story links the well with the protection of Wambierzyce during a plague in 1680. Residents attributed their survival to Our Lady's care and water from the spring. This account belongs to the sanctuary's religious tradition, as does the chapel's Marian dedication. The small scale of the chapel distinguishes it from the monumental buildings elsewhere in the Wambierzyce complex.
