Über das Objekt

Eight looms represent two periods of mechanised weaving: six date from around 1900 and two from the 1970s. During demonstrations, the machines run, letting visitors hear their rhythm rather than imagine it from a motionless exhibit.

Behind the machine stood a weaver. Older, simpler equipment required more manual tasks than modern looms. Experience, concentration and confident movements mattered. Work had to be done quickly despite the noise of the running mechanisms. That is the difference between looking at a machine and watching a workplace: even a mechanised mill depended on human skill.

The display evokes conditions in Łódź's old factories. Around the turn of the century, industrial halls contained hundreds of looms, with hot lubricant adding its smell to the clatter. The museum's selection is much smaller. Nevertheless, machines from different decades provide a concrete basis for understanding how daily work in textile production changed.
