Siberian Exile House with a labour camp
An authentic wooden house brought from near Irkutsk, beside reconstructions of a labour camp and a dugout shelter.
Inhaltssprache
The Siberian Exile House came to Szymbark from near Irkutsk. Kashubians living in Siberia donated the wooden building. To bring it to Poland, the structure was dismantled, its components transported and the house reassembled at the Centre. It is an authentic relocated building, rather than a modern replica of an exile's home.
An exhibition devoted to deportation and life in exile was built around it. Beside the house stand a model Soviet labour camp and a dugout, showing one type of shelter used by deportees. These parts of the exhibition are reconstructions and serve a different purpose from the original house.
The group also includes railway carriages coupled to a locomotive. They recall the trains that carried deportees deep into the Soviet Union. The house, camp buildings and train represent different stages of exile: the journey, imprisonment and life far from home.
