Über das Objekt

The Golf I Cabrio Automatic represents the open-top version of the popular compact in Pępowo’s collection. The museum listed it among the cars displayed in Puck in summer 2016. Automatic indicates automatic transmission, distinguishing this version from cars with manually selected gears.

The most characteristic feature of the first Golf Cabriolet’s outline is the fixed bar above the passenger compartment. It was connected with safety requirements. The bar also provided a mounting point for the front seat belts and worked with the side windows.

Volkswagen and Karmann developed the model together. Production began in Osnabrück in 1979. The Cabriolet had four seats and a folding fabric roof. It took over the role previously held in the range by the open-top Beetle.

The first generation was produced until 1993. Engines and equipment changed during this long production run. Automatic transmission was available from the early model range, so an open body did not mean that only one drivetrain configuration was offered.
