Burgher's house
A house formed from two older buildings, with a Renaissance façade restored after Brezno's great fire.
Inhaltssprache
The present burgher's house grew out of two separate, single-storey buildings dating from the first half of the sixteenth century. Around 1650, the space between them was vaulted over and joined by an entrance with a portal; an upper floor and buildings towards the rear of the plot were added later. From the 1680s, part of the property belonged to the Bendík family, who acquired the other part early in the following century. Although joined together, the property retained two separate residential sections, extended as successive owners' needs changed.
The family worked in timber processing, metallurgy and sheep breeding, ran an inn and held brewing rights. After the town fire of 1779, town captain Daniel Bendík rebuilt the house; an inscription above the entrance commemorates the completion of the work in 1784. That fire destroyed 113 houses, so this rebuilding formed part of a much wider recovery. Restoration in the 1980s recovered the Renaissance appearance of the façade, while the damaged inscription above the window cornice was preserved without inventing its missing passages.
