Sala Lwa Jaskiniowego (Cave Lion Chamber)

A palaeontological site with bones preserved in sediments that fill much of the chamber.

Über das Objekt

The chamber takes its name from an almost complete cave lion skull found during research. The animal belonged to the Pleistocene fauna whose remains were preserved in Jaskinia Niedźwiedzia. Beside the path, a palaeontological site contains bones still embedded in the surrounding material. Not every find has been removed and placed in a display case.

The visible space is only the upper part of a much larger chamber. Sediments reach almost to the ceiling, and the visitor walkway was built on their surface. This is the lowest point of the cave's middle level. The apparent height of the room does not reflect its full dimensions: accumulated material fills much of the space beneath visitors' feet.

Bones in caves may come from animals that lived there, from the prey of predators, or from remains carried in by water. These different processes contributed to the finds at Jaskinia Niedźwiedzia. Finding a bone does not therefore prove that the animal lived at that exact spot. Together, the remains and sediments provide evidence for reconstructing the history of past animal life, rather than merely a collection of individual bones.
