Kolorowe Jeziorka
Kolorowe Jeziorka, the Colourful Lakes, occupy former mine workings on the northern slope of Wielka Kopa in the Rudawy Janowickie mountains. Yellow Lake, Purple Lake, Blue Lake and Green Pond lie at different levels on the hillside. They fill hollows left by the extraction of pyrite-bearing rock. Exposed quarry walls, water and surrounding woodland now share this landscape.
The area’s industrial history began with the Nadzieja mine, opened in 1785. Pyrite was used at a local plant to produce sulphuric acid. After mining ceased, rainwater and groundwater filled the workings. Reactions within the rock and water continue to change their environment: oxidation of sulphide minerals releases iron compounds and sulphates, strongly lowering the pH in some of the pools.
The walk from the lower ponds to Green Pond passes successive levels of the former mining area. Iron compounds contribute to Purple Lake’s colour, while Blue Lake has a different water chemistry. The smaller pools sometimes dry out. Water levels depend on the weather, so the four names do not promise four equally full lakes on every visit.
