Pulpit
A carved preaching platform with Faith, Hope and Charity, crowned by an angel with a trumpet.
Inhaltssprache
The pulpit was used for sermons, so its decoration centres on the place occupied by the preacher. Three personifications support its basket-shaped enclosure: Faith with a cross, Hope with an anchor and Charity with a child. These ideas appear as human figures carrying recognisable attributes.
The work was made in 1728-1729 in August Gottfried Hoffmann’s workshop. The same sculptor later created the present altar. The pulpit belongs to the eighteenth-century furnishings, added many decades after the timber church was built.
Reliefs on the stair balustrade depict Paradise, Golgotha and Pentecost. In a relief, figures and scenery project from the background while remaining attached to its surface. Biblical subjects accompany the ascent to the place from which the word was preached.
High above the enclosure stands an angel with a trumpet, referring to the Last Judgement. The elaborate canopy gives the pulpit a strong vertical emphasis. Its supporting figures, stairs and upper section form a single composition viewed from within the church.
Für Kinder
A pulpit is a raised platform where a minister gives a sermon. This one is supported by figures representing Faith, Hope and Charity. You can recognise them by a cross, an anchor and a child. The sculptor used people and objects to show ideas that cannot be seen.
Carved Bible scenes decorate the stairs. An angel with a trumpet stands high above. August Gottfried Hoffmann made the pulpit in the eighteenth century and later carved the altar too. Visitors view the pulpit from the visitor area without climbing its stairs.
