TKt48-18 steam locomotive
A locomotive whose return to service required repairs to its boiler, running gear and valve gear.
Inhaltssprache
TKt48-18 was built in 1951. Its life in preservation included a major overhaul, after which it hauled trains again. The work took place in 2013-2014 and covered the boiler and the locomotive's other systems, with the aim of returning it to service.
The work was divided between two teams: a specialist contractor dealt with the boiler, while the museum's conservation workshop carried out the remaining repairs. The overhaul ranged from the running gear and brakes to the fittings and valve gear. The latter controls the admission of steam to the cylinders. Restoring the locomotive's appearance was not enough: the work addressed the systems that moved and stopped the heavy machine.
The test run took place in July 2014, providing a check after the workshop repairs. Between 2014 and 2020, TKt48-18 hauled more than 200 special trains. That figure records a completed period of its museum service, when the historic engine was working beyond the static display.
