Muzeum Poczty i Telekomunikacji we Wrocławiu
Original stagecoaches, telegraph equipment and stamps made from silk share the historic Main Post Office building in Wrocław. Six permanent exhibitions cover Polish postal history, horse-drawn transport, telegraph and telephone technology, radio, television and gramophones, and Polish and international philately. The collections document postal activity in Polish lands, including the Polish Post founded by Sigismund II Augustus in 1558.
The institution was established in Warsaw in 1921 as the Postal-Telegraph Museum. In July 1940, the German occupation authorities closed the museum and removed most of its collection to the Reich. Most of the lost exhibits were recovered after the war, but the institution closed again in 1951. In May 1955, postal workers with roots in the Vilnius and Lviv postal communities began organising its Wrocław home. The collections were transported from Warsaw to the building on Krasińskiego Street.
The opening ceremony took place on 12 December 1956; public visits began on 16 December. The institution has belonged to the International Association of Transport Museums since 1988. Today's displays range from a twenty-four-seat stagecoach to miniature stamps shaped like gramophone records. Between these very different scales are telephones, radio receivers and a prototype Polish television set from 1947.
