ZiS-2 anti-tank gun
A 57 mm gun designed to engage armoured vehicles.
Inhaltssprache
The ZiS-2 Model 1943 has a calibre of 57 mm. It is an anti-tank gun, intended primarily to engage armoured vehicles. At Fort No. 9, it belongs to the artillery collection. The design was developed in the Soviet Union by a team led by Vasily Grabin.
Its production history was interrupted. The first series began in 1941 but was then halted. Production resumed in 1943, when new German tanks with stronger armour appeared at the front. The model designation refers to this later phase in the gun’s development and manufacture.
The ZiS-2 was closely related to the ZiS-3, but differed from it in features including calibre and barrel length. Small numbers of ZiS-2 guns also entered service with Polish units towards the end of the war. After the war, developments in armoured vehicles encouraged its replacement with larger-calibre guns, including 85 mm and 100 mm designs.

This gun is called the ZiS-2. It was designed to engage armoured vehicles. Its calibre is 57 mm: that measures the inside diameter of the barrel, not the length of the whole gun.
A team led by Vasily Grabin worked on the design in the Soviet Union. Production began in 1941 but was later stopped. It resumed two years afterwards, when new German tanks with stronger armour appeared. That is why it is known as the Model 1943.
The ZiS-2 has much in common with another gun, the ZiS-3, but they differ in calibre and barrel length. Towards the end of the war, some ZiS-2 guns also reached Polish units. Larger guns gradually replaced them. The exhibit shows how changes in vehicle armour influenced the design of military equipment.
