Upper Castle Tower
The corner tower protected the gate to the oldest part of the stronghold.
Inhaltssprache
The upper castle tower had a quadrangular plan. Its remains belong to the medieval part of Bolczów, predating the rounded entrance defences. The different shapes help distinguish two stages in the development of the castle’s defences.
The tower flanked the gate, providing protection from the side. The entrance to the upper courtyard lay in the southern curtain wall. Tower and gate worked together to defend access to the stronghold. The curtain wall containing the gate joined two opposing rock outcrops. Masonry enclosed the space between these natural obstacles, with a passage leading into the older courtyard.
The 14th-century tower survives as a ruin. The eastern service area of the upper castle lay nearby. The entrance defences and facilities for everyday life therefore shared a small space bounded by rocks.
