Great Salon with its Library
A representative salon with a crystal chandelier and a library nook lined with walnut panelling, part of the 19th and 20th Century Interiors exhibition.
Inhaltssprache
The Great Salon is lit by a 48-candle crystal chandelier with 48 glass spheres, the largest weighing 2 kilograms. Its decorated ceiling and cove are complemented by large pastoral, hunting and genre paintings made around 1728 in the workshop of the Dutch painter Dirk Dalens III. Set into the wooden panelling, they resemble large windows opening onto landscapes. On the fireplace stands a clock shaped as a black globe emerging from clouds, surrounded by cherubs.
The adjoining library has walnut panelling and elaborate stucco decoration designed by Destailleur during the nineteenth-century rebuilding. Two glazed cabinets hold more than 200 early printed books. The library was important to the earlier owners, the Promnitz and Anhalt families. The Hochbergs kept their main family library at Książ, leaving the Pszczyna room with a largely decorative role.
