Alongside full-size vehicles, Galeria Pępowo collects model cars. They come in different scales, ranging from 1:64 to 1:18. Scale describes the ratio between a model’s dimensions and those of the real vehicle: a 1:18 model is larger than a 1:64 version of the same car.
Part of the collection grew during the Sucheckis’ travels. Models bought on their journeys joined the shared collection. Collecting small cars developed alongside their interest in full-size vehicles, but needed a very different kind of storage space.
The collection also expanded through the purchase of a friend’s models. The miniatures were placed in display cases, where many different body shapes fit side by side. This arrangement makes it possible to compare proportions, colours and forms without walking between large vehicles.
In their accounts from 2014, the owners described a collection of about a thousand models. That figure records a stage in its growth. Scale matters when looking at them: two models of similar length do not necessarily represent real cars of the same size if they were made at different scales.
For children
The display cases contain small model cars. They have not all been reduced by the same amount. A scale of 1:18 means that each dimension is eighteen times smaller than on the real car. A 1:64 model of the same vehicle is smaller still.
The Sucheckis bought miniatures on their travels. They also purchased part of the collection from a friend. By 2014 they were describing about a thousand models. Many little versions of cars stand together. To compare their sizes, check the scale: a larger toy or model does not always represent a larger real car.
