About

Taiwania, Taiwania cryptomerioides, is among the rare trees documented in the garden’s collection. It is an evergreen member of the cypress family. Its natural populations occur in Asian mountain forests: in Taiwan, China, Myanmar and Vietnam.

One of its most interesting features is having two types of leaves. On young plants and vigorous shoots, leaves are longer and pointed; on older shoots they become smaller and scale-like. A difference in leaf shape does not therefore automatically indicate two separate species. Identification needs to take the plant’s stage of development into account.

Slender, drooping branchlets give the crown its distinctive appearance. Small cones develop at the ends of shoots, and the seeds have wings. In a botanical collection these features can be compared with the structure of other conifers. The shape of the whole branchlet, leaf form and cone position offer different clues, although a young specimen may not show all of them at once.

For children

Taiwania is a conifer in the cypress family. Its scientific name is Taiwania cryptomerioides. The species is documented in Gołubie’s collection and grows naturally in Asian mountain forests, including those of Taiwan.

One tree can show different leaves. Young plants and strongly growing shoots have longer, pointed leaves. Older shoots develop smaller, scale-like leaves. A difference in leaf shape alone does not necessarily mean two different species.

Taiwania has slender, drooping branchlets. Its small cones grow at the ends of shoots, and the seeds have wings. Try examining a whole branchlet rather than a single leaf. The plant’s age affects which of these features you can already see.
