About

People in central and southern Hont depended primarily on agriculture for their livelihoods. The ethnographic collections show the material setting of that life: household furnishings and everyday objects from rural homes. They date from the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, a period also represented by the collection of traditional clothing.

The clothes belonged to two communities living in the region: Slovak and Hungarian. Alongside household objects, they introduce another part of daily life, the things people wore. The collections thus cover both the furnishings of a home and the clothing of its inhabitants.

Blacksmiths', shoemakers', carpenters' and stonemasons' tools represent craft work. There are also implements used by hatters, joiners and furriers. Each group is associated with a different material or type of product. The tools offer a chance to compare the shapes of objects made for working with wood, leather, stone and metal.
