About

The entrance to the Upper Black Adit is at the foot of a quarry in Sołtysia Mountain. The workings developed during two periods of extraction: medieval searches for gold and the mining of arsenic ores in the mid-seventeenth century. Changes in the shape and cross-section of the passages, as well as their supports, reveal different mining techniques.

Tool marks survive on the walls of hand-cut workings. Elsewhere, much larger volumes of rock were removed, leaving sizeable chambers after the gold-bearing ore was extracted. The route through this part of the mine reaches the underground waterfall and then a lower level, where a train takes the group to the surface. Both the scale of the workings and the way visitors travel through them change along the route.
