Stamps shaped like gramophone records and stained-glass windows, with examples made from silk, wood and cork, selected from the museum’s international collection.
Content language
The museum's holdings include nearly a million foreign postage stamps from almost every country in the world. The exhibition presents a selection from this collection. Subjects include works of art from different periods and figures from history and culture, including film and contemporary music. The collection's breadth is therefore both geographical and thematic.
One group features unusual shapes resembling miniature gramophone records or stained-glass windows. Other stamps stand out for the material they are made from: examples on display include plastic, silver foil, silk, wood and cork. The differences lie in the physical material and form as well as the printed image. Here, a stamp is a small object made from a particular substance, rather than simply a rectangular piece of printed paper.
