Muzeum Przyrodnicze w Jeleniej Górze
Wildlife dioramas are a principal form of display at the Natural History Museum in Jelenia Góra. The woodland Mountain Spirit’s Realm shares its natural history theme with presentations of fauna from around the world. Other displays explore the origins of birds, insects, fungi, minerals, horns and antlers. Specimens are accompanied by models and scenes recreating natural environments.
The museum grew out of the Schaffgotsch family’s collections, kept first in Sobieszów and later in Cieplice. From 1920, the natural history holdings were accessible as a museum in the Long House. In 1967 the institution moved into the Norwegian Pavilion, and in 2013 it relocated to the former Cistercian complex.
The present building retains clear traces of its earlier uses. Renovation work uncovered painted-over Baroque wall paintings connected with its Cistercian past. The historical exhibition explores Cieplice, its monastery and spa. “Silesia’s Former Treasure House” recreates an old Schaffgotsch exhibition interior using objects that remained in Cieplice after the post-war removal of collections.
For children
The museum contains scenes with animals, called dioramas. One presents the Mountain Spirit’s Realm, while others explore wildlife from different parts of the world. Separate displays are devoted to birds, insects, fungi, minerals, horns and antlers. Preserved specimens and models help explain the structure of living things.
The collection has a long history. Many holdings are connected with the Schaffgotsch family. They were kept first in Sobieszów and later in Cieplice. The natural history museum operated in the Long House and then the Norwegian Pavilion. It moved to its present home in 2013.
This building once served the Cistercians, a community of monks. During renovation, old wall paintings were found beneath layers of paint. Today the museum also tells the story of the monastery, spa and Cieplice’s past. One display recreates the appearance of an old Schaffgotsch museum room.
