Viewing platform over Fort IV's moat

A viewpoint over the old moat combines the remains of the fort with opportunities to watch waterside wildlife.

About

The platform above Fort IV's moat overlooks water and vegetation within the former defences. It is a stop on a woodland walk, not a place where wildlife sightings are guaranteed. With luck, visitors may spot a kingfisher or an otter. Both are associated with water, but their presence in the area does not mean they will appear during every visit.

The surrounding trail passes through pine woodland beside the ruins and moat. Plants growing over the structures are as much a theme of this path as the fort's history.

The platform reopened after repairs under an order issued in 2024. This maintenance work restored access to the viewpoint; it did not change the rules for entering damaged fortifications. Staying on the open path keeps a woodland walk separate from venturing inside the ruins.
