About

The display of punishment and torture instruments opened at Grodziec in early June 2008. It began with the purchase of a private collection from a collector living near Paris. The buyer was the Zamek Grodziec association. The collection arrived in late April and early May, and a separate museum display was then prepared for it.

The collection shown at the opening included objects from France, Spain and Italy. Among the exhibits listed at the time were a garrotte, a shame mask and a Spanish bed. The display concerned instruments of punishment and torture, not the furnishings of ducal chambers. It was a collection brought to the castle in the twenty-first century, not a discovery made during investigations of Grodziec's walls.

The display's history therefore begins much later than that of the stronghold. Its distinct subject is historical punishment, while the collection's origins lead beyond Silesia to several European countries.
