Protected and threatened plants that explain the garden’s role in nature conservation.

Sobre la pieza

The ecological section focuses on protected plants and species threatened with extinction. The collection introduces plants whose survival in the wild depends particularly on preserving their habitats. The garden’s educational programme includes both species protected in Poland and plants listed in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants.

The conservation walk also covers relict plants and endemics. A relict survives from the flora of an earlier period, while an endemic occurs naturally only within a restricted area. These terms describe something different from rarity alone: they help explain a species’ history and geographical range. The garden also discusses the effects of climate change on plants.

Conservation here involves caring for young plants, too. Through cooperation with the University of Gdańsk, rare Pomeranian species propagated in laboratory conditions are brought to Gołubie. Before planting outdoors, they are gradually acclimatised to garden conditions. Caring for this collection brings botany and practical horticulture together.

Para niños

Some plants are becoming increasingly rare in the wild. In the ecological section, you can learn about protected and threatened plants. Some appear in the Polish Red Data Book of Plants, which describes species needing particular attention.

Two unusual words help tell their story. An endemic grows naturally only in a limited part of the world. A relict is a survivor from the vegetation of earlier times. A plant can be important to nature even if its flower is neither large nor colourful.

The garden works with the University of Gdańsk. Young, rare Pomeranian plants propagated in a laboratory are brought here. Before they are planted outdoors, they must gradually get used to their new conditions. This is delicate work: simply finding a space in a flowerbed is not enough.
