St Catherine’s Chapel
A small treasury chapel whose dedication and function changed over the castle’s history.
Idioma del contenido
St Catherine’s Chapel was created in a former oratory, a small private prayer room adjoining the residential chamber being converted. Its sacred furnishings developed as the smaller tower became the seat of the castle chapter. It held a private treasury of relics of Christ’s Passion and remains of venerated saints. The original dedication linked it with the Passion and its signs; the name of St Catherine came into use later.
Its decoration combined stones set into the walls and paintings. This costly treatment suited its role as a treasury for objects of worship that were especially precious to its founder. On the regular castle chapels tour, visitors only look inside from the threshold. A separate evening programme allows entry, making access to the interior an important difference between these two tours.

This small chapel held relics, objects connected with Christ and the saints. The room had previously been an oratory, a place for private prayer. It became a richly decorated chapel with stones in the walls and paintings. Its present name, St Catherine’s, came later than its first dedication associated with Christ’s Passion.
The chapel is small, and how you see it depends on the tour. On the regular chapels route, visitors look inside from the threshold. The evening programme includes entry to the interior. These are two different ways of exploring the same room.
