Wielka Szczelina (Great Fissure)

A rock fissure revealing the cave's depth and traces of water that once flowed through it.

Sobre la pieza

Above the Great Fissure, the water-sculpted ceiling bears the marks of water that once flowed under high pressure. This is not a deposit built up by dripping water, but a trace of rock being worn away. The cave formed in the marble of the Śnieżnik Massif as water dissolved the rock along cracks and fissures.

About 12 metres below lies an entrance to the lower level. The tourist path also offers a view of the entrance to the Old Wrocław Sections, which extend beneath the entrance pavilion. Their name recalls the researchers from Wrocław who helped explore the cave. The standard tour follows the middle level; the lower passages are not a continuation of the visitor walkway.

Nearby, a narrow opening called the drawer leads to the New Lower Sections. Even at this first stop, the cave reveals itself as a system of levels rather than a single tunnel into the mountain. Behind the visitors is the entrance airlock, which limits the influence of outside air on the underground microclimate.
