The crypt beneath the Oleśnicki Chapel holds the presumed remains of Jeremi Wiśniowiecki in a setting inspired by the 17th century.
Idioma del contenido
The burial crypt beneath the Oleśnicki Chapel holds remains held to be those of Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki (1612-1651), Voivode of Ruthenia and commander in the fighting against the Khmelnytsky Uprising, among others at Zbarazh and Berestechko. The prince died in 1651 at Pavoloch. He wished to be buried at Wiśniowiec, but the church there had been destroyed, so his body was laid to rest on Święty Krzyż.
In 1936, when the crypt was opened, the remains in the central coffin were identified as the prince's. His biographer Władysław Tomkiewicz challenged this identification and argued that the body had burned in the fire of 1777. Research in 1980 pointed to a person taller than the prince who had died at an older age, which is why the remains are described as presumed.
The crypt has been arranged in 17th-century style. The figure is dressed in full noble attire: a cap, a żupan, a delia and boots. A mace, a sabre, a metal belt and a cross have been placed by the coffin, and the interior is completed by a heraldic cartouche, a banner and replicas of hussar lances with pennons. The entrance to the crypt lies by the south wall of the monastery, and a visit to it is combined with the Benedictine crypts.
From 1 May to 31 October, the crypt is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 18:00. During winter, from November to the end of April, the attraction is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Plan your visit before the attraction closes. The monastery itself closes at around 20:00 from May to October and at around 18:30 in winter; these times do not apply to this attraction.
