Warszawa Śródmieście Station
A railway model introducing post-war architecture and art designed around passengers.
Idioma del contenido
Warszawa Śródmieście Station has its own model at Kolejkowo. The real station was designed by Arseniusz Romanowicz and Piotr Szymaniak, architects associated with Warsaw's post-war railways. Construction took place in two stages: the entrance pavilions and unfinished platform hall came first, followed later by the completed interiors.
The pavilions were built in 1954-1955, while the completed station opened on 29 September 1963. Covering the excavation at the earlier stage was connected with preparations for the opening of the Palace of Culture and Science.
A team from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts' Artistic and Research Workshops, led by Jerzy Sołtan, designed the real hall's interior. Their work included signage and acoustics as well as the appearance of the walls.
Wojciech Fangor was responsible for the artistic design, including mosaics. Colour and diffused lighting were intended to reduce the sensation of being underground. The model recalls a station designed to be experienced both on foot and from a moving train.
