Hochberg family pew
A glazed private pew recalling the Książ family’s support for the church’s construction.
Idioma del contenido
The Hochberg family pew occupies a prominent position opposite the pulpit. Richly decorated and enclosed with glass, it belonged to a family counted among the church’s most important benefactors. Its position offered a good view of the preacher while visibly expressing the family’s status.
Hans Heinrich II von Hochberg, owner of Książ Castle, supported the church’s construction with timber from his forests. The pew expressed gratitude to the family. They had their own separate seating area among the community’s galleries and private pews.
Seventeenth-century glazing survives here. The large family pew stands beside a smaller one belonging to Konrad Ernst Maximilian von Hochberg. Both were created in the late seventeenth century and have undergone conservation in recent years.
The decorated front and heraldic cartouches connect the furnishings with specific donors. Alongside religious themes, the interior reveals the social hierarchy of the past. Visitors can appreciate the pew as part of the church’s decoration without entering it.

A private pew is a separate place to sit. This one belonged to the Hochbergs of Książ, who helped build the church by donating timber. It stands opposite the pulpit, where the family could see and hear the minister preaching.
The pew has elaborate decorations, coats of arms and glass dating from the seventeenth century. A smaller pew belonging to another family member stands beside it. Both show how seating could express the importance of donors. Their decoration can be seen from the accessible part of the church without going inside the pew.
