Andean condor
An Andean scavenger connected with Kraków’s involvement in returning birds to the wild.
Idioma del contenido
An Andean condor searches for food while soaring high above the ground. It mainly eats the carrion of land and marine mammals, and its diet also includes birds' eggs. Its natural home is the Andes, where it occurs above the tree line, at elevations of around 5,000 metres.
It nests in a rocky recess on a high cliff. The female lays one egg, which both parents incubate for about 60 days. A young condor can fly after roughly six months but does not reach sexual maturity until around six years old. Developing into an adult takes this large bird many years.
Kraków Zoo has its own chapter in this story. The female Beti, hatched here in 2021, was transferred to a bird-of-prey rehabilitation centre in Chile on 8 August 2023 as part of a reintroduction programme coordinated by Fundación Bioandina. It is an example of cooperation linking zoo breeding with preparations for returning animals to their natural environment.

On a rocky cliff, condors find a recess for their nest. The mother lays one egg, and both parents incubate it for about 60 days. The young bird can fly after roughly six months. Maturity comes much later, at around six years old.
A female named Beti hatched in Kraków in 2021. Two years later, on 8 August 2023, she was transferred to a centre in Chile. She took part in a programme preparing condors for a return to the wild. This large bird also carries a real story of cooperation between people on two continents.
