The ram from Jordanów
A Neolithic clay figurine decorated with cord impressions, found in Jordanów Śląski.
Idioma del contenido
The clay ram from Jordanów Śląski dates from the Neolithic and is associated with the Funnel Beaker culture. This name refers to an archaeological group of finds rather than a community whose own name is known. The figurine is dated to around 3400 BC. It measures 32.5 centimetres high and 37 centimetres long, making it much smaller than a living animal. It is a three-dimensional representation of a ram made from clay.
The body and horns carry decoration impressed with cord. This detail deserves as much attention as the animal's shape. The object has been interpreted as possibly having a ritual purpose. Suggestions include a substitute offering or an image connected with a deity. These remain hypotheses about its use. The surviving object reveals its material, form and ornament, but does not establish exactly how its makers used it.

This ram was made from clay about 5,400 years ago. It comes from Jordanów Śląski and measures 32.5 centimetres high and 37 centimetres long. It is much smaller than a real ram, although it represents the same animal.
Look closely at its body and horns. The patterns were made by pressing cord into the clay. Researchers wonder what the figurine was used for. It may have been connected with ancient beliefs, but we do not know for certain. We can, however, examine the shape and patterns left by its maker.
