The Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age

Ice Age animal bones and stone tools introduce the earliest inhabitants of Silesia.

Sobre la pieza

The earliest section of the exhibition begins its account of settlement in Silesia around 500,000 years ago. It covers the Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age. Alongside objects made by people are bones of animals that lived during the Ice Age. The remains on display include mammoth and woolly rhinoceros bones. These finds introduce a world far older than the towns and castles familiar from the region's landscape.

Tools and flint objects form another important part of this account. Displaying them alongside animal remains brings together two themes: the ancient environment and objects left behind by people. Look separately at the bones and tools, as they represent different kinds of evidence. Identifying an animal answers a different question from identifying an object made by human hands. This section of the museum presents both groups of finds within a single display.

Mammoth and woolly rhinoceros bones help us imagine Silesia long ago. These animals lived during the Ice Age. This part of the museum begins its story around 500,000 years ago and covers the Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age.

There are also tools and objects made from flint, a kind of stone. Bones are the remains of animals, while tools are traces of people's work. As you look around, try to tell these two groups apart. Each helps us understand a different part of the distant past.
