SON-9A radar station
A radar for directing anti-aircraft artillery fire, transferred to the museum by a Jelenia Góra military unit.
Idioma del contenido
The SON-9A supported anti-aircraft artillery by providing information for laying and controlling the fire of medium-calibre guns. It was neither a launcher nor a radar belonging to the KUB system. Developed from the earlier SON-4 station, it was manufactured in Poland under a Soviet licence in the 1960s.
The equipment had automatic range tracking and operated with pulses at a wavelength of 10 cm. Besides distance, it measured the direction of a target and its angle above the horizon. This went beyond simply detecting an aircraft: the station helped establish its position for the artillery. Electrical power was as necessary as the antenna and measuring equipment; the APG-15M generating set worked with the SON-9A.
The Jelenia Góra exhibit bears the number KOW 311. Military Unit 2773, based in the city, transferred it in 1993. Its internal radar equipment had already been removed. The surviving object preserves the external form of equipment donated by the garrison, but it is not a complete, working radar.
